Why do more and more people choose to attend international schools?

Why do more and more people choose to attend international schools?
March 29, 2020

More and more people have chosen to study abroad as a novel way of education, and most students who decide to study abroad will choose to complete high school stage in domestic public high school international classes or private international schools . Therefore, international schools have sprung up on the road of education,

According to data, the total number of Chinese students studying abroad continued to increase in 2017, and the number of young students studying abroad also continued to increase. According to the US Department of State's Open Door Report, as of 2017, undergraduate and high school students studying in the US have surpassed graduate students. Many parents choose to send their children to study abroad in junior high school or even elementary school. On the one hand, it is to avoid the pressure brought by college entrance examination, on the other hand, it is also hoped that the child will receive international education as soon as possible.

With the upsurge of studying abroad at a young age, overseas high schools and international schools have thrown out olive branches. American private middle schools that focus on developing self-learning ability have gradually gained domestic recognition in recent years. Representatives from Bancroft College, Cod Middle School, Central Catholic High School, and Notterdam Catholic High School at the American Private High School Admissions Officer's Media Conference held recently by the Beijing Xinzhongguan Learning Center Talk about studying abroad in American high schools.

Children who go to high school in the United States will have certain advantages in applying to local universities in the future. The essence lies in the improvement of the child. When receiving education, children promote independent thinking and communication skills. Studying abroad helps students gain a multicultural experience, which can help a person form a three-dimensional personality and unique competitiveness.

With the rise of international education at a young age, studying abroad has penetrated into more families in the country. When choosing a country to study abroad, parents also have more choices. In addition to the traditional study abroad countries such as the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia, countries such as Germany and Italy are increasingly popular. International schools located in Singapore have become the first choice for domestic middle-class families. The reporter learned from the recent admissions seminar held by the Singapore Institute of Management that the school ’s selection test for Chinese middle school students will be conducted in May, the school adds an international A Level course, and provides 5 scholarships for applicants of all grades. . It is understood that the school ’s curriculum focuses on applied learning in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and humanities.

No matter where you are studying, the purpose of education has never changed, and the conditions for success have not changed. Education is about making people stand hard. Studying at a young age is conducive to exercising children's independence, improving their ability to adapt to society, and cultivating students' global perspective, but if it is difficult to integrate into foreign life, it will adversely affect their growth.

To study abroad, knowledge and language preparation is necessary, and psychological preparation is also essential. Children studying abroad at a young age and living and studying alone in another country will encounter great pressure. Only when they can accept failure and learn, reflect, and adjust from failure can they do better and better. Whether to choose to allow children to study abroad at a young age, parents and students should comprehensively analyze the pros and cons, and think rationally.

New course at Charterhouse brings ethical studies up to date with the world around us

The Theology, Philosophy and Ethics department has taken a leap forward in ethical education with a brand new course in ‘Tech Ethics’.

As each day passes, technology determines the course of more aspects of our lives. We depend more and more on algorithms and machine learning. From the mundane, such as the route to our next destination determined by Google Maps and the films we watch on Netflix, to the significant such as the identification of criminal suspects and the diagnosis of cancer. Artificial intelligence has seeped into our lives little by little and with it the list of ethical questions raised has only grown.

The Theology, Philosophy and Ethics department at Charterhouse has developed a brand new course to bring ethical studies up to date with this world of AI and machine learning. Equipping young people to address questions of digital ethics could not be more important and will give Carthusians the skills and understanding to play a central role in global debate in the years to come.

In this new course, pupils in the Fourths will have the opportunity to explore in-depth through debate, discussion and written analysis, some of the most pressing technological issues of our time within the context of philosophical ideas of the past and present. They will consider the role of big data and privacy in a world where large corporations collect vast amounts on every online user. Pupils will understand the nature of our ‘digital self’, exploring the philosophical questions which emerge about human identity. Libertarian philosophy will be considered within the context of sharing medical data through devices such as a ‘FitBit’. Pupils will debate the use of algorithms in the criminal justice system, as well as in modern warfare. Can we even trust the algorithms we depend on or should we accept their results with ‘blind faith’? They will see the potential for an ‘explosion’ in AI Superintelligence, leading pupils to reach their own conclusions as to the kind of future world in which they want to live. In the process of this course, pupils will engage with the latest publications in tech ethics, from Max Tegmark’s Life 3.0 and Nick Bostrom’s Superintelligence to Sheila Jasanoff’s The Ethics of Invention and Hannah Fry’s Hello World. At the same time, the course seeks to show that the ideas of philosophers such as the 17th century Immanuel Kant are incredibly relevant to the brand new ethical discussions of the 21st century.

Within secondary education, Charterhouse is a pioneer in putting a course in digital ethics at the heart of its curriculum. By embarking on this new course, the school is aligning itself a growing movement within philosophical and ethical studies led by the Digital Ethics Lab at Oxford, as well as Stanford and Harvard in the US. Charterhouse has ambitious aims for this new course and aims to spearhead a movement to place ‘Tech Ethics’ at the heart of 21st century learning.

Pupil Christopher Lim reports on a fascinating talk from the bestselling author

Pupils were recently given the opportunity to hear from Tim Marshall, the former Foreign Affairs Editor at Sky News and author of the bestselling Prisoners of Geography, to talk about his most recent book: Divided: Why we’re living in an age of walls. From the line of visiting prep school boys eagerly waiting for a signed book at the beginning, to the crowd of Year 12 and 13 pupils that surrounded him at the end, Mr Marshall’s lecture most certainly drew a lot of attention and excitement from pupils and teachers of all ages.

In his lecture, Mr Marshall gave us a comprehensive tour of the conflicts and issues facing the world powers and our own lives today. From migration patterns over this century, to rainfall distribution in China and, most importantly, the answer to: “Why we’re living in an age of walls”. Mr Marshall’s lecture gave us a broader insight into the common issues that our world faces, from human instincts that go back to the beginning of civilization to xenophobia and division in our societies today. He explained how Geography answers a lot of these questions.

If anything, Mr Marshall highlighted the interconnectivity of Geography, Politics, Economics and History. He highlighted how the problems we will be facing in the future such as the digital divide, AI and its implications, and climate change are all much more challenging than the social issues faced by most other generations. Even then, he added, the social issues that developed societies face, such as racism and homophobia, persist in every country and that conflict over borders remains as strong as ever.

I would like to thank the work of Mr Price and Dr Sutton, as well as that of the Geography and Politics Departments respectively, in helping put this together and bringing Mr Marshall to Charterhouse, as well as Sabina Zainullina for her moving Vote of Thanks.

A Round-Up of Sport

March 29, 2020
Catch up on last week's news from the Sports Department
A Round-Up of Sport
March 29, 2020

Girls Sport

Football

A great week for girls' sport. We started the success on Tuesday with both football teams securing good wins against Guildford High School. Some outstanding play from both teams and lots of goals scored. Players of the Match went to Isla Horscroft for the First Team and to Londyn Denford for the Second Team.

Saturday was the inaugural Charterhouse Invitation Girls' Football Tournament. The girls were outstanding and gave 100% in all the matches they played. The First Team got through to the finals but unfortunately lost out to a well-drilled Ardingly College. Nonetheless, the girls should be commended for a very high standard of football.

Player of the Tournament went to Isla Horscroft, but special mention should go to Lola Petermeijer and Gabi Nelson for their work rate on the pitch. The Second Team also played some great football and battled hard against other schools' A teams. Player progress was evident all round as the team improved significantly over the course of the tournament. Charterhouse Players of the Tournament went to Sophie Stingelin and Serafima Klimenko.

Netball

Tuesday saw the First and Second Team beat Epsom College Fourth and Fifth Team. The Third Team showed real promise against Epsom but unfortunately, the opposition were more consistent on the day. Players of the Match went to Fike Adeybi and Mattie Monteforte for the First VII Team, Hero for the Second Team and Emma Horiguchi and Peach Suwannakit for the Third Team.

Downe House School then travelled to us to play some senior netball on Saturday. Again, some very close games which saw it go goal to goal and kept winning predictions wide open throughout. The Third Team had the lead going into the last quarter but unfortunately the win slipped away by 5. Player of the Match went to Emma Horiguchi and Megan Suckling. The Second Team had a fantastic match, but the score didn't reflect the standard of the game. Player of the Match went to Peach Suwannakit and Most Valuable Player (MVP) to Alanagh Kelly.

The First VII Team also had a nail-biting game which saw Downe House get the win by one goal. It was an outstanding game and the team should be very proud of their efforts. Players of the Match went to Hero Coles and Aoife Mulligan Smith. Hero Coles and Emma Horiguchi should be congratulated on being Players of the Match for both Tuesday and Saturday.

It was International Women’s Day on Sunday and we can be confident that we have some inspiring girls who will soon be the role models for the younger girls when they start in 2021. It was fantastic to have been able to put out five representative teams this week; the girls should be proud of what they have achieved.

Boy's Sports

Hockey

This week saw Charterhouse play 17 fixtures against three separate schools. During the mid-week fixtures the U15C and U14B teams enjoyed good wins against King Edward’s Witley. On Thursday, our U14A and B squad merged to play a strong side from Sir William Borlase. The boys showed great perseverance in horrendous weather conditions and after going 4-0 down early on, came back into the game scoring two late goals to make the final result a 4-2 loss.

Saturday’s fixtures were against Tonbridge in a shortened block due to the activities weekend. The spirit on pitch was very sporting and all players enjoyed a good competitive fixture. Results were mixed but a highlight would be the U15As 6-1 win. This side is developing nicely bearing in mind the year they had last season. It is pleasing that they are starting to see results that their hard work in training deserves.

It was pleasing to be able to field 12 fixtures around the activities weekend, keeping lots of pupils involved in co-curricular activities throughout the term.

Fencing

Fencing had a closely fought match against Westminster; impressively, winning 3-2 overall. We will take even more pride in the fact that Winchester claim this was their first defeat this year.

Fives

Senior 1st Pair (Hector Platt and Gus McLellan) and 2nd Pair (Jamie Marmion and Demilade Adeyinka) both had closely-fought matches but lost in 3 sets; whereas, Pair 2’s games were all decided by a single point. There is a silver lining however, as both pairs had plenty of practice for the national schools’ tournament at the end of term where we will match up against Eton again to right some wrongs!

Senior 3rd (Toby Ball & Charlie Turner) won their fixture with ease. Our 4th Pair retired after John Wu unfortunately picked up an injury to his hand.

The Year 9 team won 2-1 overall. We lost at Pair 1 (Will Bishop and Vladimir Dmitriev) but triumphed at 2nd (Perch Suwannakit and Max Ongko) and 3rd (Sonny Albert and Oscar Quinton).

Racquets

Our racquets team also came up against Eton on Thursday 5 March. The 3rd Pair and the Year 9 team of both enjoyed convincing 3-0 victories and secure bragging rights for now.

Waterpolo

Our fixture list against Eton College was bolstered by an away competition in Eton waters. Our U16 boys were playing there for the London Schools Boys Finals – a top feat to have reached this stage! The boys did show some signs of excellence; however, perhaps the pressure of playing away from home was contributory to our narrow losses in all three games against Eton College, City of London and BMS.

Year 13 pupil and event organiser Louis Thomson reports on concert’s success

Plugged concert returned for its third year and it has certainly found its feet as a unique event: a relaxed set of talented acts, with an atmosphere best described by a smile. A few dozen audience members were treated to a variety of songs ranging from well-known hits by Coldplay (In My Place) and Pink Floyd (Comfortably Numb), to the jazzier, slower numbers of Elvis Presley (Love Me Tender) and Gregory Porter (Water Under Bridges). To top off a wonderful night, Year 13 pupil Eva Pomery left everyone in awe of her stunning vocals as she sang The Beatles’ Oh Darling! with such flair that we can all feel sure about the future success of Charterhouse music.

Although the concert wasn’t a talent show or contest of sorts, I’d certainly say that the audience were the winners this year!

In celebration of British Science Week

Charterhouse held its first STEM Fair on Friday 6 March, in celebration of British Science Week. This demonstrated the huge variety of opportunities to get involved with science at the School.

There were a total of 18 pupil-led stands from all areas of science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. These included the chance to try your hand at being a vet, to cover the floor with ‘elephant’s toothpaste’, to solve mathematical puzzles, to become a maggot-racing champion and to even see the gory insides of a rat or frog at the hugely popular Dissection stand!

We also welcomed some pupils from Aldro and Edgeborough to the fair, which allowed them to experience the full extent of the science programme here, and even try Deep Tech drawing and drone flying.

It can be definitely concluded that the first Science Fair at Charterhouse was a tremendous success. And we look forward to many more in the future.
